Green Lane Footbridge
As many people will know, Elmbridge Council has recently closed the footbridge leading over the River Mole from Green Lane to Neilsons Field.
Cllr Mike Axton has checked the position with the Council’s officers, and unfortunately it is not good news. The Council obtained a structural survey of the bridge as a preliminary step before refurbishing it, as reported in the latest Molesey Residents Association Newsletter. Unfortunately the survey advised the Council that the condition of the bridge had deteriorated to the extent that it could not safely continue to be used by pedestrians, and that they should close it.
Although we find it difficult to believe there is a genuine risk that the bridge might be about to collapse, in view of the terms of the advice they have received the Council had no real option to closure, as keeping it open would affect their insurance in the event of any accidents etc.
Given the inconvenience the closure has caused to residents, particularly those living near the bridge who want to access Neilson Field, Mike has asked the Council to let him know urgently what they propose to do in order to restore access to Neilsons Field from Green Lane as soon as possible. Given the terms of the survey we assume they will need to replace the bridge, but we will provide an update as soon as we have any more news
